How to charge an EV at home
To charge an electric car at home, you should have a home charge point installed in the place where you usually park your car. This can be a driveway or garage.
You connect your EV to a charge point using a compatible charge plug and cable. As standard, Shell Recharge charge points come with a standard Type 2 plug. This means that our charge points are compatible with all current EV models.
Plug in whenever you're home
We always suggest plugging your car in when you get back from work, or you plan to leave your car parked for a long time. If you plug in overnight when your car is left idle on your drive, you can wake up in the morning ready to take on the day.
Home chargers are great for this type of charging, when your car is just sat there, you might as well make use of the time. In other words, home chargers do the hard work, so you don’t have to.
How to start a charge at home
You can start your charge in the way that is most convenient for you. With AutoCharge, your charge session begins as soon as you plug in. Alternatively, set up a charge schedule to start and stop automatically at a time of your choosing. For a more detailed description, read our blog article on how to charge.

Why do I need a home charge point?
In theory, it is possible to charge your EV battery by plugging it in to a 3-pin household plug, but there are very good reasons why you shouldn't. Not only will this take a long time, but it is dangerous. The cables are not designed for such a continuous load of power, especially in older houses.
Instead, we suggest installing a home charge point. You get the convenience of charging your electric vehicle whenever you want. Because you know you can charge outside your front door, you won't ever have to go out of your way to charge on your way back home. Plus, you have the option to save on electricity, by charging during “off-peak” hours when rates from your residential grid are low.
Shell Recharge charge points have many safety features integrated as standard, so you can sleep easy at night. They come with inbuilt protection to prevent over-current and a standard 2-year warranty, to name just a few. Furthermore, they can also include lots of great features, that make your charging experience even better.
Charging for longer journeys away from home
With a home charger, although you can confidently conquer all most all shorter journeys, longer journeys in an EV do require slightly more preparation. You will at some point need to recharge. The best thing for this is stopping off at a motorway service station or Shell forecourt where you can do a quick charge whilst you stretch your legs, grab a coffee and pick up something to eat.
With ultra rapid 150kW+ chargers, you can charge most EVs in approximately 30 minutes. You will find these at Shell forecourts. To access the Shell Recharge network of public charge points, download the Shell Recharge app and order yourself a free charge card.
Charge scheduling for home charging
By scheduling charge sessions, you can get a session to start at a time that is convenient for you. The feature allows you to set repeating schedules that suit your driving behaviour and your lifestyle.
Also, by setting up a charge session to begin when demand on the grid is low, you can take advantage of reduced rate “off-peak” tariffs. This is not only beneficial for the load on the grid, it is also possible to save on your electricity costs. All of this can be managed remotely, anywhere, anytime. Check out the Shell Recharge app or read charge scheduling FAQs for more detailed information.
More home charging smart services
Alongside AutoCharge and charge scheduling, there are other great features that will allow you to get the most out of your charge point. As all our charge points are either online or Bluetooth connected, services can be added, optimised or removed as you go. Enable Dynamic Power Management, guest usage, automatic reimbursement and remote stop and start functionalities. With Shell Recharge you have full control of your charge point and depending on your model can manage all your needs through the Shell Recharge app.
Balance your home charging with Dynamic Power Management
Keep your electric car charging without overloading your home with Dynamic Power Management. It harmoniously distributes power to your whole house so all your appliances can run with the power they need. The module will dynamically adjust your charge point to an optimal charge speed to avoid over exertion, especially when many appliances are in use. When more power becomes available, charging will automatically resume to the fastest rate. Balancing of the electrical load also makes installation of a second charge point possible.

Charging speeds at home
We understand that car charging times can be a worry if you’re thinking about making the switch. But did you know that 65% of EV drivers in the UK now use a dedicated home charge point, up from 57% in 2021? The top three reasons for installing a home charger were improved convenience, improved safety and faster charging speeds. In fact, using a dedicated home charge point can charge your EV up to 3x faster with 7.4kW or 6x faster with 22kW than a 3-pin plug.
There are a few factors that need to be considered when looking at charging speeds, size of battery, charge point power and electrical supply. Most homes have single-phase grid connections, which allows speeds of 7.4kW. This means, depending on the battery size, an average car will take 5-6 hours to fully charge at home.
An EV with a 60 kWh battery will take around 8 hours to charge from 0-100% on a 7.4kW charger. You can also work out the charging time for a specific EV, see below.
Work out the charging time for a specific EV
- Battery capacity in kWh / charging power in kW = charging time (h).
