How to charge an EV at home
Simply put, you plug an EV in, and charge through an electrical current, just like you do with any other appliance.
To charge an electric car at home, you should have a home charge point installed in the place where you usually park your car. This can be a driveway or garage. You connect your EV to a charge point using a compatible charge plug and cable. As standard, Shell Recharge charge points come with a standard Type 2 plug. This means that our charge points are compatible with all current EV models.
Plug in whenever you're home
We always suggest plugging your car in when you get back from work, or you plan to leave your car parked for a long time. If you plug in overnight when your car is left idle on your drive, you can wake up in the morning ready to take on the day.
Home chargers are great for this type of charging, when your car is just sat there, you might as well make use of the time. In other words, home chargers do the hard work, so you don’t have to.
How to start a charge at home
You can start your charge in the way that is most convenient for you. With AutoCharge, your charge session begins as soon as you plug in. Alternatively, set up a charge schedule to start and stop automatically at a time of your choosing. For a more detailed description, read our blog article on how to charge.

*The hardware allows for charging speeds of up to 22 kW but most homes have single-phase grid connections enabling speeds of 7.4 kW. Homes with three-phase connections can charge at speeds of up to 22 kW for an additional installation fee.
**All home charge points require a corresponding subscription to make use of smart services. For Shell Recharge Advanced, this subscription is mandatory. Terminating a subscription can be done monthly. Please find more information about Subscriptions.
Why do I need a home charge point?
In theory, it is possible to charge your EV battery by plugging it in to a 3-pin household plug, but there are very good reasons why you shouldn't. Not only will this take a long time, but it is dangerous. The cables are not designed for such a continuous load of power, especially in older houses.
Instead, we suggest installing a home charge point. You get the convenience of charging your electric vehicle whenever you want. Because you know you can charge outside your front door, you won't ever have to go out of your way to charge on your way back home. Plus, you have the option to save on electricity, by charging during “off-peak” hours when rates from your residential grid are low.
Shell Recharge charge points have many safety features integrated as standard, so you can sleep easy at night. They come with inbuilt protection to prevent over-current and a standard 2-year warranty, to name just a few. Furthermore, they can also include lots of great features, that make your charging experience even better.
Charging for longer journeys away from home
With a home charger, although you can confidently conquer all most all shorter journeys, longer journeys in an EV do require slightly more preparation. You will at some point need to recharge. The best thing for this is stopping off at a motorway service station or Shell forecourt where you can do a quick charge whilst you stretch your legs, grab a coffee and pick up something to eat.
With rapid 50 kW chargers, you can charge most EVs in approximately 30 minutes. You will find these at Shell forecourts. To access the Shell Recharge network of public charge points, download the Shell Recharge app and order yourself a free charge card.
Charge scheduling for home charging
By scheduling charge sessions, you can get a session to start at a time that is convenient for you. The feature allows you to set repeating schedules that suit your driving behaviour and your lifestyle.
Also, by setting up a charge session to begin when demand on the grid is low, you can take advantage of reduced rate “off-peak” tariffs. This is not only beneficial for the load on the grid, it is also possible to save on your electricity costs. All of this can be managed remotely, anywhere, anytime. Check out the Shell Recharge app or read charge scheduling FAQs for more detailed information.
More home charging smart services
Alongside AutoCharge and charge scheduling, there are other great features that will allow you to get the most out of your charge point. As all our charge points are either online or Bluetooth connected, services can be added, optimised or removed as you go. Enable Dynamic Power Management, guest usage, automatic reimbursement and remote stop and start functionalities. With Shell Recharge you have full control of your charge point and depending on your model can manage all your needs through the Shell Recharge app.
Balance your home charging with Dynamic Power Management
Keep your electric car charging without overloading your home with Dynamic Power Management. It harmoniously distributes power to your whole house so all your appliances can run with the power they need. The module will dynamically adjust your charge point to an optimal charge speed to avoid over exertion, especially when many appliances are in use. When more power becomes available, charging will automatically resume to the fastest rate. Balancing of the electrical load also makes installation of a second charge point possible.

Charging speeds at home
We understand that car charging times can be a worry if you’re thinking about making the switch. But did you know that 65% of EV drivers in the UK now use a dedicated home charge point, up from 57% in 2021? The top three reasons for installing a home charger were improved convenience, improved safety and faster charging speeds. In fact, using a dedicated home charge point can charge your EV up to 3x faster with 7.4 kW or 6x faster with 22 kW than a 3-pin plug.
There are a few factors that need to be considered when looking at charging speeds, size of battery, charge point power and electrical supply. Most homes have single-phase grid connections, which allows speeds of 7.4 kW. This means, depending on the battery size, an average car will take 5-6 hours to fully charge at home.
An EV with a 60 kWh battery will take around 8 hours to charge from 0-100% on a 7.4kW charger. You can also work out the charging time for a specific EV, see below.
Work out the charging time for a specific EV
- Battery capacity in kWh / charging power in kW = charging time (h).
Are you eligible for the OZEV EV charge point grant?

The OZEV EV charge point grant reduces the cost of a home charger and its installation by up to £350. Do you meet the following criteria?
- You own and live in a flat OR rent any residential property
- Your home has its own private off-street parking space
- You own a qualifying vehicle
- You have not already received this grant or a grant under the Electric Vehicle Home charge Scheme

Frequently asked questions
Many things can impact the price of an EV charge point. You can view the starting prices for each of our models, Connect and Advanced online, but If you fill out the enquiry we can get back to you with a more accurate quote.
It is hard to give an estimate because the cost of installing a home charge point can be impacted by so many variables, these include the condition of the existing electrical installation and the location of the electricity metre. These can vary from building to building, because not every house, garage, or parking space is the same. Please be aware that the installation costs are in addition to the purchase price of the charge point. All prices are without guarantee and may vary under given circumstances.
Prices include VAT and standard single-phase installation. The £350 OZEV grant is not included as eligibility criteria and is changing to specifically support those in leasehold, rental accommodation and apartments. Where applicable, we will make sure to add the grant.
For home charging, your regular home energy tariff will apply to the energy you consume. With a home charge point, you can take advantage of cheaper electricity rates when demand on the grid is low during “off-peak” hours. You can even set up a schedule for charging to start and stop during these times.
Also, by plugging in and charging during “dormant” hours, means you do not need to pay for ultra-rapid charging speeds.
It is more cost-effective to charge at home using a home charge point than it is to plug into a domestic wall socket, because they are quicker and specifically designed to take the load of charging a car.
Installing a home charger is easy. Follow our simple steps, create your ideal charge point, confirm the setup and desired features and then an expert will be in touch to book the installation. Start the process by building your perfect charge point on the configurator, and we will guide you through.
As standard, Shell Recharge charge points come with a standard Type 2 plug, this is considered to be the UK and European standard.
Most public charging stations are also equipped with a Type 2 socket. This means our charge points are compatible with all current electric and plugin hybrid electric vehicle models and manufacturers.
It is likely that the charge point will use 32 amps and charge at 7.4kW, due to the electricity setup of the UK, however, the power that a charge point needs depends on the model you choose and your grid connection. Use the configurator to create your ideal charge point and our team of charging experts will assess if this is feasible for your home setup.
Despite Shell Recharge giving access to 300,000 public charge points, getting a private home charger is arguably the most convenient way to charge your EV. Plus, the Shell Recharge charge points come with a standard Type 2 plug, that is compatible with all EVs. So whether you want to charge your Tesla, Hyundai IONIQ, or Nissan LEAF, Shell Recharge has it covered.
Activating Connect
Activation and onboarding is easy with the Connect by Shell Recharge app. Once you have downloaded the app, you will be prompted to activate your charge point by adding the ID-CODE. You can find this on the pamphlet that is in the box. Once you have activated it, you can connect your charge point to Bluetooth. Stand close to your charge point whilst you enable the connection.
Activating Advanced
You need to have an active charge card to activate your charge point. Order a free charge card through your online account or the Shell Recharge app, if you don't already have one.
To activate your charge point, go to https://account.shellrecharge.com/. FYI you can use the same credentials for both your online account and the Shell Recharge app.
You can add your charge point through your online account. To add your charge point:
- Go to “Charge Points” in the menu
- Click the “Add Charge Point” button
- You will be asked to enter the charge point serial number. This enables us to identify your model. You can find your serial number on your invoice or on the right side of the charge point.
Once you have added the charge point online, it will also be visible in the Shell Recharge app.
To activate the Shell Recharge card, go to the Shell Recharge app. Make sure you are signed in with your credentials. You will find “charge cards” under the “Account” section of the app. Here you can activate charge cards, plus you can order new ones.
The app will ask you to scan the card by placing the card in the highlighted box on the screen of your phone. It does this to scan the unique charge card number, but you can also enter the number manually.
