What are the charging costs of an EV in Europe?
In many European countries, like the Netherlands, UK and Germany, you pay per kWh. For some providers, there is also a transaction fee. Whilst charging on the Shell Recharge network in the UK, you will not pay a transaction fee when charging at Shell Recharge operated charge points that use the Shell Recharge app as a payment method (includes forecourts, Waitrose and selected Aldi* destination sites). You will also not pay a transaction fee if you choose to pay "ad hoc" with a contactless payment method.
In charge per minute countries, like France, you also get charged for the time you are charging and in Germany you may have to pay a blocking fee if you stay longer than the "free" period. In the UK, a blocking fee is applicable on the charge points operated by Source, London.
As you can see, there are a lot of variables that affect the final cost of a charge session. As a result, we cannot give price estimates. Instead, we always recommend checking the Shell Recharge app or read more about it our A complete guide to electric car charging costs in Europe.
*At following Aldi destination sites you will not pay a fee:
Aldi Scartho Top, Aldi Mansfield, Aldi Deal, Aldi Chapel en le Frith, Aldi Cambuslang, Aldi Mill Lane, Aldi Holliers Walk.
