Top tips for charging your EV in the most cost-effective way
Whether you're a seasoned EV owner or contemplating making the switch to e-mobility, these tips will guide you in optimising your EV charging. We touch on a few things that can not only make your charging more affordable but also enhance your overall EV ownership experience. From leveraging off-peak hours to exploring Shell Recharge's promotions, we've got you covered.
Tips for cost effective public charging
1.Slow speeds = cheaper rates
While home charging is convenient and cost-effective, you might still need to use public charging. To save money when doing so, consider apps (such as the Shell Recharge app) and websites that provide real-time information on charging locations and tariffs. Rapid DC charging has its advantages but charging with a lower power AC charge point costs less per kWh charged so can keep your EV charging costs low.
2.Get the most competitive rates
When you charge at Shell locations and pay using a Shell Recharge card, you will get a more competitive tariff than if you charge ad hoc with a contactless payment method. Learn more about public charging prices.
3.Promotions and offers
Keep an eye out for offers from charging networks that provide access to discounted charging rates. We quite often run special promotions that can make charging your EV more cost-effective. You can find them in the “Rewards and Partnerships” section of the Shell Recharge app.
4. Charge your EV at work
Many businesses and employers also provide the option of free EV charging at the workplace, which can be a valuable benefit. If your employer has not yet installed charging units, you might consider informing them about the Workplace Charging Scheme.
How to charge your EV cost effectively at home
5.Off peak home energy rates
The most cost-effective way to charge your EV is often at home. Installing a home charge point is a one-time investment that can significantly reduce your charging costs. Many energy providers offer lower rates for off-peak hours, so consider charging your EV during these times, usually late at night. This not only saves you money but also reduces the strain on the grid during peak demand. With charge scheduling features you can effortlessly automate your charging during these times, simply pre-program when you want your sessions to start and stop.
6.Government grants
Investigate available government incentives, such as tax credits, rebates, or grants, to help offset the initial cost of your EV or home charging equipment. In the UK for example, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) provides grants to help with the costs of charge points and installations. The grant covers up to 75% of the cost to buy and install a charge point socket, up to £350 per grant.
7.Solar power integration
If you have the opportunity, consider integrating solar panels with your home charge point. Solar power can significantly reduce the cost of charging your EV and make your energy use even more sustainable. Although it is something we are looking at, currently Shell Recharge charge points cannot run exclusively on renewable energy.
8.Smart charging
Invest in smart charging equipment and software that allows you to optimise and monitor your EV's charging remotely. It helps distribute energy demand more evenly, reducing peak loads and associated higher costs. It will ensure you're not overcharging, which can negatively affect your battery's lifespan. Although currently not available, watch this space for future smart charging capabilities in the Shell Recharge app.
Tips for getting maximum mileage
9.Efficient driving habits
Adopting efficient driving habits can help all drivers get the most mileage out of their EV. Smooth acceleration, keeping a consistent speed, minimising the use of climate control and regularly checking your EV's battery management system can all help. Keeping your battery healthy can extend its lifespan, reduce charging frequency and the need for expensive replacements.
10.Regenerative braking
Same with this one, this can extend the range of EVs and reduce the need for frequent charges, whether you’re charging at home or in public. Take full advantage of regenerative braking technology, which converts the kinetic energy from braking into electric energy to recharge the battery.
By following these tips and being mindful of your EV charging habits, you can drive your electric vehicle without breaking the bank. Not only will you save money, but you also contribute to a lower carbon future when you make more electric journeys. Charging your EV cost-effectively is a win-win for both your wallet and contribution to the energy transition.
