Rapid DC charging has its advantages but charging with a lower power AC charge point costs less per kWh charged so can keep your EV charging costs low.

2.Get the most competitive rates

When you charge at Shell locations and pay using a Shell Recharge card, you will get a more competitive tariff than if you charge ad hoc with a contactless payment method. Learn more about public charging prices.

3.Promotions and offers

Keep an eye out for offers from charging networks that provide access to discounted charging rates. We quite often run special promotions that can make charging your EV more cost-effective. You can find them in the “Rewards and Partnerships” section of the Shell Recharge app.

Many businesses and employers also provide the option of free EV charging at the workplace, which can be a valuable benefit. If your employer has not yet installed charging units, you might consider informing them about the Workplace Charging Scheme.

With charge scheduling features you can effortlessly automate your charging during these times, simply pre-program when you want your sessions to start and stop.

6.Government grants

In the UK for example, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) provides grants to help with the costs of charge points and installations. The grant covers up to 75% of the cost to buy and install a charge point socket, up to £350 per grant.

If you have the opportunity, consider integrating solar panels with your home charge point. Solar power can significantly reduce the cost of charging your EV and make your energy use even more sustainable. Although it is something we are looking at, currently Shell Recharge charge points cannot run exclusively on renewable energy.

It helps distribute energy demand more evenly, reducing peak loads and associated higher costs. It will ensure you're not overcharging, which can negatively affect your battery's lifespan. Same with this one, this can extend the range of EVs and reduce the need for frequent charges, whether you’re charging at home or in public. Take full advantage of regenerative braking technology, which converts the kinetic energy from braking into electric energy to recharge the battery.
